Is Energy not your major problem in Nigeria

This is such a wonderful theme unfortunately there is no public notification about the summit. With the drive for open government and open data, I tend to wonder if there is synergy among ministries and Agencies. If the Ministry of Communication and Technology has signed and started the open data development initiative, open data initiative. Then an agency is doing a summit such as this and did not deem it fit to blog about the event, post in on their website, tweet.

Is Energy not your major problem in Nigeria

Participatory engagement of citizen in educational and learning experience.

The Energy commission of Nigeria (ECN) organised a National Energy Summit with a theme such as this

“Energy and the Transformation agenda in Nigeria”

This is such a wonderful theme unfortunately there is no public notification about the summit. With the drive for open government and open data, I tend to wonder if there is synergy among ministries and Agencies. If the Ministry of Communication and Technology has signed and started the open data development initiative, open data initiative. Then an agency is doing a summit such as this and did not deem it fit to blog about the event, post in on their website, tweet.

What pops up is another summit to be held in May

I even had a conversation with one of the officials in charge of registration and attendance he does not know the website address of the commission. He had to take me to the roll up banner and asked me to look at the website there? That took me aback.  If agencies, government official are not ready to move us ahead why should the citizen keep expecting from the government?
That is why we have decided we will not wait for them anymore. We would start carrying our load on our heads and they would be force to help us take it to our destination.

The next question that comes to minds is

  • What is the objective the Summit?
  • Who are the target audience?
  • What impact would the workshop have on the society, on energy in a short-term in a long-term
  • Are there plans to monitor and evaluate the impact level of these workshops, summit and seminars?

My thinking

I don’t know if someone have the same line of thought, if Energy is a major problem that Nigeria needs to solve. Now a commission that is established to facilitate in solving this problem is not involving the general public, experts in the field of energy conservation and sustainability, students that have done their final projects on energy and the private sector especially the Business men bringing all sort of solar equipment from China. There are many students that their final year projects, their master thesis would be dump in a pile of forgotten papers that end up at the “Acara women’s shop” and prototypes be left to rust, become useless at most University Engineering workshops and tertiary institutions. Why not allow them to come and showcase them in such summit? Why not allow them to come and bring their little ideas to a participatory discussion with experts the commission is able to invite. Create a mentorship environment for future collaboration between the experts and this upcoming technopreneurs.

  • But why not agencies start thinking about the long term  impact of workshops and conferences?
  • When tomorrow we come and tell you we don’t know what you do at the commission you blame us. How would we know if you don’t tell us? You don’t make information available.

What is #LinkedIn thinking

What is linkedin?

What the #Wiki says

LinkedIn /ˌlɪŋkt.ˈɪn/ is a business-oriented social networking service. Founded in December 2002 and launched on May 5, 2003,[3] it is mainly used for professional networking.”

And from About.me “LinkedIn is the leading online professional directory of individuals and companies…. search for jobs, join groups, research companies, and network with members of their network.”

The concern of Unemployment

The UN has shown concern over the unemployment rate being the highest. And I think Linkedin is trying to solve that problem with its platform.

But I found bugs in the Economic graph Challenge terms and conditions

This document was release on the internet at slideshare. I discover the “bugs”: the words global and every used in the document when it is only US resident that can participate. That means there is an “exploit”.linkedinQuestions.fw

There is the need for the Internet Law Bodies to look carefully into issues like this. I feel disfranchised, if I could have my information on #Linkedin but I cannot work on my data and participate in a challenge as this that could help me contribute in reducing the high rate of unemployment in my continent and country then I fear to say; “What is the Internet, and who controls its content?”. This Economicgraphchallenge presented by Linkedin provides the opportunity to initiate ideas and research proposals that are specific to our localities.

There are services like github, skype, cisco webex, ustream that could allow geo-collaboration on any project, research without distorting the depth of the work done. LInkedin open up the economy graph challenge to encompass every other part of the world.

If the Internet needs to remain open, please do things that would encourage its openness.

Africa is rising and wants to key in.
